Victims of sexual violence in sports break the taboo.
The #MeToo that floods social media after the Harvey Weinstein scandal, points out that sexual intimidation and sexual abuse fester all over society and surrounded by a big omerta. Even in sports – normally a world of joy and health – 1 in 5 minors becomes a victim of sexual violence, states criminologist Tine Vertommen, who carried out the first evidence based study of this phenomena. “There are 24.000 sports clubs in Flanders, with 850.000 minor sporters. This affects thousands of children.” In Foul Play three brave sporters break the omerta. Leen (34) was abused by her judo coach for six years, Jolien (18) was raped by her swimming trainer, Julie (28) was assaulted by her athletics coach. For the first time they share their story about the horror they went through and the impact on their lives.
